From 8th to 12th May, Bali hosted the Fourth Meeting of the Parties, a biennial meeting to discuss issues related to the implementation of the FAO Port State Measures Agreement (PSMA), which aims to eliminate illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.
The event culminated in the approval of a strategy to intensify efforts on IUU fishing through expanded vessel inspections and global information sharing.
“FAO works with countries and regional fisheries management organisations to combat IUU fishing […] so that they can effectively implement the PSMA and other international instruments to promote sustainable fisheries”, said Manuel Barange, director of FAO’s Fisheries and Aquaculture Division.
