The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has launched the “One Country, One Priority Product” global initiative in the Europe and Central Asia region with the aim of transforming agri-food systems into more efficient, inclusive and sustainable models.
“One Country, One Priority Product” focuses on boosting ecology and promoting sustainable value chains for “special” agricultural products; that is, those local products that have so far not been integrated into agricultural research and development, despite having special value and contributing to improved food security, nutrition and livelihoods.
“They are usually produced, processed and traded locally by small-scale actors and marginalised producers, including women”, says Pedro Arias, an FAO economist.
