On 7 April, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, in coordination with the Spanish Institute of Oceanography, began the research campaign “Pelacus 0423”, whose objective is to evaluate and characterise the main fishery resources through the oceanographic vessel Miguel Oliver.
The vessel of the General Secretariat of Fisheries set sail from the port of Vigo and will be at sea until 30 April analysing pelagic fish species (such as sardine and anchovy), the water column, planktonic biomass abundances, observation of marine mammals and birds and surface debris, as well as buoys and small plastics present in the marine ecosystem.
The research will provide a holistic view of ecosystems to meet the objectives set out in the European Union’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive. The campaign is part of the National Fishing Sector Basic Data Programme and responds to different commitments acquired at the international level for the sustainable management of our seas.
