The Government of Spain has launched an Irrigation Modernisation and Transformation Plan to convert the current irrigation system into a sustainable model.
Through the plan, more than 200,000 hectares of irrigated land will be modernised, benefiting more than 20,000 irrigators in the country. In addition, the almost 500,000 hectares that already have modern irrigation systems will receive further improvement to their efficiency with the support of new technologies.
The Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, has pointed out that sustainable irrigation plays a key role in the future of the Spanish agrifood sector and that this is the most ambitious programme of this century, with an investment of more than 2.13 billion euros.
“It is not a matter of choosing whether to irrigate or not, but rather choosing efficient and sustainable irrigation for all”, said the minister during the inauguration of the “Spanish irrigation, a benchmark of sustainability and modernity” conference, held in the province of Cordoba.
