The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Netherlands announced that it will invest USD 4.95 million to finance the WaPOR project of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). The initiative, which aims to manage water resources sustainably, will now be able to expand the scope of the database to the entire world and incorporate two new partner countries in Asia and Latin America.
The WaPOR portal was launched in 2020 and relies on satellite data to help farmers optimise irrigation systems, enabling them to achieve higher and more reliable agricultural yields.
“Water is the key element in the transition to sustainable food systems and its management needs to be improved”, said Ms. Kitty van der Heijden, Director General for International Cooperation at the Netherlands Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
