Now available! CEMAS publishes its new book Resources, Strategies and Potentialities for Food System Sustainability in the Mediterranean Area

Back in 2020, we started a wonderful journey to publish a book that would highlight the richness of the Mediterranean, a space that offers a permanent exchange like few other places on the planet and where history, the social habits of its inhabitants, biodiversity and climate coexist. All these factors form an ensemble that deserves to be studied as a complex food system. For this reason, CEMAS has published the book Resources, Strategies and Potentialities for Food System Sustainability in the Mediterranean Area, coordinated by the researchers Noelia Betoret and Ester Betoret.

In the spotlight

The book, available in both physical and digital versions, aims to describe and analyse the characteristics of Mediterranean food systems, focusing on sustainability in each part of the food chain. In other words, it seeks to detect the strengths and weaknesses of its food systems through a comprehensive analysis.

Renowned specialists from different parts of the Mediterranean participated in the project to achieve this much-needed 360-degree vision. Researchers in Spain contributed by highlighting the beneficial health aspects of the Mediterranean diet and analysing the issue of land use and recovery. In France, they proposed alternatives to promote local agriculture. Italy took a technological approach to food utilisation and waste management. From Algeria, the biodiversity of the Mediterranean area was analysed in depth. Finally, the research staff from Greece focused on social behaviour habits that contribute to the sustainability of the food system.

An X-ray of the richness of our land

The publication is aimed at social agents, members of the academic and scientific community, the private sector and public administrations. However, it is a book that is intelligible to everyone, addressing aspects of everyday life from the point of view of science. In the words of Vicente Domingo, director of CEMAS, “one of the many great things about this book is that it allows for a high level of scientific reading, but at the same time it brings this interesting area of knowledge closer to people who are not experts in these matters”.
