Millions of girls and boys around the world eat at public schools. But who decides what is served in the school canteens? How are the menus chosen? Where are those foods bought?
Schools, hospitals, prisons, retiring homes… there is a large amount of food that is purchased by administrations. And we ask ourselves: Which criteria are applied? Is price the only priority? Are the Sustainable Development Goals being taken into account when choosing suppliers?
FAO’s “Green Cities” initiative is an ambitious project to improve the well-being of urban and peri-urban populations.
Did you know that more than half of the world´s population live in cities? Today more than ever we know that a high population density means an environment that is more conducive to disease.
What if the fruit you buy in the market, in addition to being delicious and healthy, helped fight global warming and took care of the species that inhabit our planet? Without synthetic additives, pesticides, or chemicals, but full of flavour, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.
It is possible to eradicate hunger, take care of our health and heal the planet. Most of the answers to these problems depend on cities. The decisions we make on city level have great impact.
